Smart Ideas for Smarter Cities

IBM had spent over a century making business easier. The challenge was making that relevant to the people living in the cities IBM claimed to be transforming. This campaign did it by turning the medium into the message - outdoor advertising that didn't just communicate utility, but demonstrated it.

The Challenge

IBM's Smarter Planet platform was resonating in boardrooms. But on the street, it remained abstract - a brand promise that everyday people had no reason to believe or care about. The brief was to close that gap and make IBM's vision of smarter cities tangible to the citizens actually living in them.

The Approach

Instead of telling people cities could be smarter, we showed them - by making the advertising itself smarter. Three outdoor executions were built with functional extensions that doubled as street furniture: a billboard with a bench for tired pedestrians, an awning to shelter commuters from the rain, and a built-in ramp for wheelchair users, cyclists, and anyone navigating city stairs. Each carried a single line: Smart Ideas for Smarter Cities.

Campaign Case Study

Beyond the Billboard

Each execution drove to a digital platform - the People for Smarter Cities Program - where citizens could submit ideas directly to city leaders searching for solutions to real urban challenges.

The outdoor work didn't just demonstrate IBM's technology philosophy; it activated a community around it. The campaign reframed IBM's relationship with everyday people - not a distant enterprise technology company, but a partner in the places where people actually live.
